Permeable Reactive Barrier

Permeable reactive barriers are for treating contaminated groundwater impacted by VOCs.

Introduction

Permeable reactive barriers (PRBs) arein situ structures installed across the flow path of a contaminated groundwater plume, treating contamination as it passes through while allowing unimpeded ground waterflow.

Treatment agents with the permeable reactive barriers (PRBs), including zero-valent iron, chelators, sorbents, compost, and microbes, either degrade contaminates to non-toxic end products or retain them in a concentrated form within the barrier material, which may need to be replaced periodically.
